[i] 1. Boys are already under a lot of social pressure to NOT dance, because it is not "masculine" enough. This is obviously not true, but playing girls' roles would just prove the point. 2. Society in general is more worried about boys acting like girls, than girls acting like boys. Go figure... 3. There are MANY fewer boys than girls in ballet. Women will commonly "fill in" a male part for which there were no men available. There is rarely a need the other way. If a man is playing a women's part, it is almost certainly for effect.Go look up the Trockadero's, an all-male ballet troupe that plays both mens' and women's classical parts.-- Bob>I know this subject has come up before, but I just saw a performance of a local dance group here in Illinois and in one of the numbers, one of the boys, about age 10, was dancing a girls part as a "toy doll" in a tutu and all. I also once played a girls role in a school play a few years ago. My question is, who has or knows anyone else who has performed on stage in dance or theatre as a member of the opposite sex, and what is the policy of each dance company when it comes to this? I know its very common to see girls playing boys roles, soldiers, etc...but it seems to be rare when boys do it. Any thoughts? By the way, I am an 18 year old male dancer from Illinois. Thanks! [/i]
