It was about after 3 years of ballet that I started to perform in recitals and annual performances, I danced as a boy in Hansel & Gretel, Fritz and later the mouse and other male roles in Nutcracker and Afternoon of a Faun (new version by Jerome Robbins) There is no reason for your son to dance as a girl unless he wanted to. I only started to perform in the female role after became quite good in pointe work, even then my school was reluctant in letting me dance en travesti. It was my love of pointe work and encouragement from my mom that I got to perform sometimes as a girl. It is really up to you and your son to determine what he wants to do. I don't think a school should insist your son to dance as a girl even if he is the only boy, the school should instead encourage your son to dance as a masculine boy as much as possibe to encourage other boys to start ballet.
