I was running behind in some of my work so early one Saturday morning I was installing a burglar alarm system in a ballet supply store in the mall portion of a large shopping center. It was shortly after nine when a lady came in with three children. The two girls were in their mid to late teens but the boy was only about eleven or maybe twelve at the oldest. I didn't take notice of the boy at first, I was busy working and I figured the mother was buying some dance clothes for the two girls. Then he loudly said "I'm not going to wear any sissy girls tights and leotards and you can't make me!">I started listening closely and discovered that his school was putting on a play and his part required him to wear a pair of blue tights and long sleeve leotard. The four of them had driven quite a distance to the store and the mother was quite put out about his behavior. She was trying her best to make him behave but when she gave him the package of leotards and tights to try on, he threw a truly horrible temper tantrum. It culminated with him throwing the packages back across the counter and calling his mother and older sister a number of very nasty names. Things went rapidly down hill for him after that.>After speaking with the sales lady, his mother grabbed him by his ear and while the sales lady held open the door she and his oldest sister marched him into the back room. Even with the door closed you could easily hear the ensuing squeals and loud smacks that came from the back room. Moments later the sister came out with the young man's clothing and returned with the leotard and tights.>Again there were some arguments, and a couple more loud smacks followed by frantic pleading, before the three of them came out of the back room. The boy, obviously embarrassed, was now wearing blue tights under a blue, long sleeve, turtleneck leotard. It was obvious he didn't want to be wearing them. I could tell he wasn't happy as he nervously wandered about the room while his mother and the sales lady finished with his two sisters. They were purposely making him wait because of his behavior. When they finally examined the fit of his costume they decided that he needed a different size leotard and he was quickly sent back to the changing room to try the new one on.>I was fascinated with what was happening and continued working behind the counter so I heard the conversation between the mother and sales lady. The mother was apologizing for his bad behavior, but Karen the manager told her not to worry about it. He was certainly not the first young man reluctant to wear tights and leotards, and that was one reason why there was a paddle hanging on the wall in the back dressing room. Karen then suggested that his mother really wanted to improve his behavior she should consider making him wear his tights and leotard for the rest of the day while they went shopping. Saying it was a natural consequence for his bad behavior and at the same time it would help him become accustomed to wearing tights out in public. That way he wouldn't be so embarrassed when he had to wear them in the play.>His mother thought it was a very good idea, as did his two older sisters who were now standing at the counter with their mother. I started feeling sorry for him, but it was exciting the way his mother and sisters were ganging up on him. By the time he came out of the dressing room wearing his new leotard, his older sister had taken his pants and locked them in the trunk of their car. The only thing he had to wear with his tights and leotard, was a white sweatshirt and white sneakers.>I watched him closely as he discovered how he would be dressed for the rest of the day. He quickly became frantic as he pleaded with his mother trying to change her mind. That's when I discovered that this was only the first stop on full days shopping expedition. They were going to several more stores in the shopping center for several hours of shopping, lunch; more shopping followed by dinner and a movie before going home. Understandably he didn't want to do that dressed in a sweatshirt and shiny blue tights.>I had to see more of this so I decided to follow them around the mall for a bit to see what happened. I told the manager that I had to go get some supplies from the hardware store and would be back shortly. I had a fine view as the mother and two older sisters struggled with the frantically pleading young man as he tried to change his mother's mind. He was almost hysterical as he struggled with them to keep from being dragged through the front door and into the busy mall. He calmed down a bit before his mom used the paddle from the back room, but he still didn't want to go. However he didn't want the paddle used again either. He was still pleading and whining as his mother and sisters forced him into the mall>I followed them through the mall to JC Penneys. The boy was still upset, I could tell he wanted to be anywhere else as his sisters, one on each side, tightly held his hands so that he couldn't get away. >As I followed them I had mixed feelings of sympathy and excitement for him as I tried to imagine what he must be experiencing. Excited, thinking about his spending the entire day dressed in tights and leotards, but also sympathetic to his plight of obviously being forced to wear them to please his mother and sisters.> He was calmer now but still his garments caused a great deal of interest and mirth as he walked about. People would walk past then stop and stare at him. The worst reaction came from several groups of girls about his own age. The first group whistled, then one girl called out loudly, "NICE TIGHTS," before the collapsed into a fit of giggles. She second group not only stopped, and giggled, but they went back past him so that they could get a better view as he walked by them again. I watched him tense up as one of the group actually stopped and asked him why he was dressed like that. His sisters had released his hands and he was constantly tugging on the bottom of his sweatshirt as he vainly tried to pull it down to cover more of his tights.>While it was interesting I couldn't spend any more time watching the young mans punishment and public humiliation. So reluctantly, I headed back to Radio Shack to get the parts I needed for the alarm job. Radio Shack was outside the mall in the open-air part of the shopping center at the far end of a long L shaped line of stores. It took me some time to get there. The shopping center was having a sidewalk sale and the sidewalks were packed with people and merchandise. On my way back to the ballet store, I again passed the four of them. The mother and the two daughters were slowly going from store to store looking for bargains. The poor young man now looking more miserable then before, as he stood about on the crowded sidewalk in the bright sunshine. >I saw them one more time before I finished my job and that was when I went to the Morrison's in the mall for lunch. I saw the four of them about fifteen feet in front of me in the line. >As I finished the job, I asked Karen if she often had men buying tights. "More often then most people would suppose. They always fall into two groups, those that want to for their own reasons and that group is usually dancers. Then we have the second group, those that have to, like our young friend earlier. They end up wearing them to please someone else, Mother, Aunt, girlfriend, Fiancée or wife. Just last week we had another in the second group. Girl came in with her Fiancée. He had proposed to her and she had accepted, but on one condition. Since she wore an engagement ring she wanted him to start wearing tights under his street clothes as a sign of his commitment to the engagement.>I finished soon after that but the incident started a number of things for me that will have to be the subject of other letters. But I still wonder what it would be like; to be forced to go out in public dressed like he was dressed, with no control over where you go and or long you have to be there.
