For performance, they wore very long silk<br>stockings that reached to the top of the leg. "They were secured by<br>placing several coins around the top...tying the coins with strings,<br>& then gathering & tying the strings around the waist." That sounds<br>fearfully uncomfortable, & she says they were.<p>The first leotards were worn exclusively by men, because in those<br>days it was O.K. for men to show their legs, but not for women.
