The standard ballet class uniform for men is black tights, white t-shirt AND A DANCEBELT! (Color of tights can vary)
A dancebelt is a special type of athletic supporter for the male danseur. It typically has a thong-back. Get thee to a real dancewear store and ask the sales clerk for help. Even if it's a girl or a woman, most sales folk in a dancewear store are familiar with dancebelts.
You wear the dancebelt under your tights. It may be uncomfortable at first, but you'll get used to it. When wearing a dancebelt, you draw the testicles and penis up out of the crotch and seat them as highly as possible in the pouch, with the penis pointing up towards your belly-button. This is necessary because you don't want to get the family jewels crushed when you get to performing certian dance movements. With the penis up agaist the lower belly, it's usually not as noticable.
Typically, balletboys don't wear a leotard over their tights, although I have and will sometimes. If you wear a leotard, it typically is worn under the tights.
Regarding the t-shirt. It should be worn inside the tights. The teacher needs to see all of your leg muscles, including how your butt is working. Some guys wear the t-shirt outside, letting it fall down to crotch level, for modesty. You don't have to be that modest in ballet class.
I understand you were very embarassed about the ladies staring. It's nothing to worry about. Some guys don't have the ability to get good advice about dressing for ballet until they're well into classes. A lot of it can be hit or miss. This DanceWearDreams site is probably not the place to discuss male dancewear in ballet class....try the serious male dancer board or male dancewear board. There are other sites where serious male dancers can correspond, too.

>I am 24 years old and I recently signed up for a dance class. This class is mostly female and there are only two males and I am one of them. At the very first class the instructor said that we should wear something comfortable while in class. I wore Danskin Ultra Shimmery tights (black) and a t-shirt. I was doing the routines like everyone else and noticed at least 10 of the female students kept looking at me, but I didn't know for what reason, because I was too busy doing what we were supposed to do. I finally figured out why they were staring and it was because there was a major buldge in my tights. I tried to hide it but to no avail. As soon as class was over I left immidiately feeling very embarrassed. The next time in class I wore a ladies workout leotard over my tights to prevent this problem from happening again. I did solve the problem I had by wearing this leotard. But now I am embarrassed because I am the only guy in the class who wears a workout leotard and tights. The wowmen could care less if I am wearing tights, but when they see that I am wearing a leotard they keep starring. So what do you suggest I do now?>Thank you all for replying> Bruce[/i]
