This is a funny question! Not funny Ha! Ha! But funny strange.
Look around. Society doesn't generally like the idea of guys in ballet, and lots of people think they're a necessary evil.
I'm been dancing since I was about 4-years-old because I loved ballet. BUT I learned in my bedroom with books my Dad bought me. He encouraged me to learn. HOWEVER, my Mother prohibited me from taking ballet classes. I didn't take my first class until I was in my early teens and could take the bus after high school to a studio. (My Mother thought I was on the school newspaper!)
Look at the dancewear catalogues. While they show the girls in everything from tights and leotards to "undergarments" and trunks, the boys section always has drawings of garments.
We all know dancewear is functional and allows the body to move, but show a picture of a guy in tights and the guys AND the gals are sure to point out the "funny looking bulge!" And then the comments usually go to something like "He' gotta be a f****" etc.
As a dancer, you've probably realized that all male dancers are not gay, but it's a perception that guys have to deal with on a daily basis. Society is not too happy with gay males, and just because there's this misperception that male dancers are gay, the male dancers get the (unjustified) funny looks.
Sure, I wish there was more interest in male dancewear. I'd like to get some dancewear that fits properly. But most of the male dancewear sold seems to have been made from female patterns, with a slight adjustment in the breast area. Go figure![/i]
