I have been a musician since the age of 11, both instrumental (French Horn, baritone sax, bassoon and viola)and vocal, which I persued on my own with much encouragement from several excellent teachers, friends and professional musicians. By forcing these students into an art form which requires certain attributes and most importantly desire, it would create a negative experience, which none of the performing arts needs. Furthermore, if that would have happened to me, my parents would have raised holy hell with the school's administration, if not filing charges against the teachers and the school for child abuse, criminal assault, etc. It is attitudes like those shown in the story which gives dance a bad name, as if sexual harassment (i.e. University of North Carolina) and fatal practices (i.e. Heidi Guenther's death) isn't enough.
