They don't have a clue about practical things to wear, but anything other than baggy gym shorts and a torn cotton t-shirt are vaguely threatening to them. If you choose to wear "fashion forward" gym clothes, you can either change at home or get used to the stares. You ask if it is OK to wear thongs. Only you can be the judge, based on what feels and looks right to you.
