My advice: just do it (it might help to have an idea of what you want first). Your first time buying a leotard in public is a huge rush in itself (or maybe that's just me?.. nope, I've read enough to know that's not true). Here's my story (I'm 25): For the longest time I've thought that the leotard is the ultimate cut of clothing, and lycra the perfect fabric. Only recently (two weeks ago) have I had the guts to buy a leo. I thought the hard bit would be that decision, but I went round all the stores of two malls without turning up anything in the way of leotards. So, a dancewear store it had to be. There are 4 such stores where I live. I picked one at random. Went in, encountered a salesperson, said I wanted a leotard for me, that I wasn't a dancer, that I'd ideally like a plain longsleeve high-neck one but would happily consider others. She (the salesperson) showed no signs of surprise - and at no time did I feel that she thought I was a cross-dresser or anything (which I don't consider myself to be). She showed me the tanks that boys typically wear, and the various other ("womens", I guess) styles they had, and mentioned that hikers often wear them as an under layer (news to me). She also suggested unitards (which I'm less interested in). I'd taken a couple of measurements beforehand so I'd have an idea of my size. They didn't have exactly what I was looking for but I found a few nice ones. She suggested that I try them on for size (just like that). I did, and chose a couple that fit great and bought them. I've also phoned another dancewear place asking about what they had, and they to had no problem with me wanting a leotard 'for me, as casualwear' either. Good luck. Feel free to ask any Q's.
