They never really caught on, because most guys couldn't figure out what to wear under them. The shorts don't give enough support on their own and going commando shows more than most guys are willing to do. Jockstrap lines look horrible under Lycra and tightie-whites are worse. If the sporting goods stores had displayed dance belts next to the Lycra shorts, they would have helped introduce more guys to the idea of wearing one and enhanced the popularity of these shorts. I was introduced to dance belts when I took up ballet in high school, but now wear one stretch, for yoga, and other activites when I want secure support.
