Close but no cigar. The inventor was Jules Leotard, an aerialist.(Can't find his dates, but he appeared in the U.S. in 1868.) Itwasn't a full-body garment; it covered his torso only; a full-bodygarment is known these days as a "unitard" (as you probably know).Tights-like legwear goes way back in history, but tights, as weknow them, date to around the time of the French revolution & areattributed to M. Maillot, a costume designer for the Paris Opéra.Yes, they were made for men, but I don't know whether they weremade exclusively for men.
