Most times (perhaps all times), what we call traditional, was at one time (and probably many times not that far back in the past) the newfangled way a bunch of young upstarts were doing things.
For instance, at one time, ballet (though probably in a very different form than we know it today) was for men only. I can't remember the year that women were first allowed into ballet (I could probably find it if I wanted to), but I am certain that to a great many this was a great affront to "tradition."
