[i]Quite simply, don't lock them. Maybe it helps to understand how to straighten limbs. The idea is to make them as long as possible. So you pull them out from the hand/foot in a direction away from your body. The goal isn't to move your knee/elbow back, which would result in locked limbs --- it is to move the hand/foot as far away from the body as possible, which results in lengthened limbs. This is practiced in every ballet exercise.
