It's a good deal more than how your feet are. Turnout begins at thehip. The whole reason for turnout lies in the structure of the hipjoint; if you don't turn out, the pelvis interferes with the top ofthe femur, and this limits how far you can degage in second. It'sbetter to be slightly turned out from the hip than fully turned outat the foot.
The test is in plies. Are your knees pointing in the same directionas your feet? Because the direction of the knees shows how turned-out your hips are. If the feet are more turned out, this is knownas "forcing your turnout" & puts excessive strain on your knees &ankles.
