>>>What does going on pointe feel like? I like ballet now, although I am a late starter. I'm 24. How do I land lightly on my feet? Where can I practise?>>I started ballet lessons once a week for almost eighteen months when I>>was 32. I moved and had a difficult time finding an adult beginning class.>>At age 35 I started taking classes at several different studios due to my>>crazy work schedule and to take class 4 nights weekly. I wanted to try>>pointe and did start beginning pointe classes at age 39. It's very>>difficult for me because I have poor turn out and flexibility (not from>>lack of trying!) I found that working on pointe showed me exactly where>>my weakest areas were. "Pulled up" became so much clearer to me as did>>being more aware of my posture. I don't know if I'll ever be able to>>truly dance on pointe, but it certainly helps to know what areas to work on.>>If you can find an instructor who will work with you closely, go for it.>>Make certain you are PROPERLY fitted for pointe shoes also. They are as>>different as dancers themselves. Don't try pointe at home EVER! >>Make sure you are properly wqrmed up also. Good Luck.>I also started ballet when I was in my 30th. I had the advantage of being in sports for all of my teenage and early adult years. I had the muscle and strength to advance onto point within 2 years. I have been dancing on pointe for the last 25 years, just finished another Nutcracker performance. Funny that I am now more flexible than I ever was when I was young. I have more fears in trying risky steps, for with age, comes the knowledge that an injury can sideline me for a long time. I continously work on my strength, any chance I have I lift onto demi point at least 20 times on each leg, every day, without holding on to anything, strictly relying on my center. I have never enjoyed anything more than dance. I will never be a prima ballerina, but I have developed a body line and arches I am proud of, and that is really the most important aspect. To be the best I can be as an individual. By the way, I am 61, and tonight is my point class and I can't wait. (I can pass for 45)Nature has blessed me.[/i]
