My experience is you will probably find more tap classes available to you as an adult than any other discipline and if all you want to do is dance then this is a great outlet. If you really want to do ballet, then check your local colleges if the local studios fail you. Check at dance supply stores as well as many owner's of them know who teaches privately and can give you recommendations as they know who is buying shoes for what. But the college level is really the best place to start as an adult if you want to be challenged. IMHO. I am heading back to a local college again this semester for another bout at Ballet, although I would prefer the Modern dance class. >:| And Modern is another Viable option. It has many roots in ballet and after a couple of years of dancing ballet it is another great area to explore, especially if you dont get as flexible as you would like. Modern is a real great outlet which is based on the kinesthetics of human body such as breathing and motion and body memory on many of the same levels as ballet does, only the forms are augmented in such a way that it is really more about getting yourself to know the position. But no. your long legs have nothing to do with the amount or limit to your flexility. Genetics does, and how often (not how deeply) you stretch does. I have had more success stretching lightly after my body is warm from dancing in a class than to stretch cold; and there is a propensity to stretch too deeply when warm so make sure you listen to your body as I injured myself twice stretching to deeply when warm. Although stretching cold gives you a good idea of where you flexiblity lies, the warm body is much better at deepening those lengthenings. Note I call it lengthening and you should really think of it as lengthening, not stretching. Also. The only place I really "learned" how to lengthen was in a Yoga Class. Try finding a Kripalu yoga class in your area as it is one of the most peaceful methods with about 20-30 minutes of a moderately intense workout in a 1.5-2hour class. If you have never "really" learned to stretch before it is a great place and way to learn how to stretch, learn how to play, learn about your core, and to respect the limits of your body.
