It is one of the attributes of the ballet. And it is done for a number of reasons. It is better for balance. It is better for the beauty of the line of the body. It is better for speed of movement. It is better for the facility of movement. It also gives you a back foot and a front foot. If your feet are both side by side - there is no back foot nor front foot. So there are many reasons. A turned out leg goes up higher. Feet that are turned out and moving swiftly have less of a change of catching on one another and tripping. And it is a much more beautiful line of the leg and body.
