Male dancewear...

written by balletboy  on 07.03. at 04:15:41 - as answer to: Leotards by Toby at
There are lots of "rules" about dancewear.  Traditionally for males in ballet, the uniform is dancebelt, tights and t-shirt.  The dancebelt is really important, and you didn't mention that.  Wearing a dancebelt is another special problem with guys, with lots of different advice available.

I think leotrads are no problem.  Traditionally, if a guy wears a leotard in ballet class, he wears a dancebelt underneath it and tights over it. Leotard, the MAN who invented the leotard, wore his leotard over his tights.  But for some reason, in ballet today the leotard is worn under the tights.  Sure, over the tights it helps hold the tights up, but most guys use other methods to hold up their tights.

Me...if I wear a leotard it has to be a thong-backed leotard; that's with a thin butt-strap. I'll wear these over tights because I like the look of a white butt-strap against my usual grey tights. A full seated leotard can conceal the muscles of the butt.  In ballet, it's important to see how the butt muscles are working.  My main concern with dancewear is that it fits up into my butt-crack so both buttocks are clearly seen.  I check how and when they flex and release in the mirror all the time.  That's honesty, also a current topic for guys on the message boards.

There are a lot of messages about male dancewear on the serious male dancer, and some on the male dancewear site, but there also are other sites, like www.danceart.com (use the apprentice entry so you don't have to pay $10) or www.balletalert.com, where guys discuss their dancewear.

I believe that whatever you have is OK for dance.  We can't all afford to have loads of dancewear.

If you want to discuss more about male dancewear personally, I'd be happy to email with you.  Just click on the highlighted "balletboy" above for my email box, theboy@balletboy.com, and leave me a message with your questions.

There are lots of us guys who correspond about male dancewear and how we feel about it and our concerns about how we look to others.  I can tell you how I feel and suggest other guys who will tell you how they feel.

Here to help!  balletboy
