Guess what! Schools are graded and require disciple, so dress codes apply. But when you take open classes, especially adult classes, people couldn't care less about the effect of pink slippers on discipline, because everyone is there to work.
Guess what! Some people are on budgets! If you take classes often, ballet slippers wear out, so if it fits, who cares about the color or price as long as you have enough money to take the next class?
I've been lucky because I've been able to keep myself in the ballet slippers I like...but I don't buy $100+ fancy-name sneakers...I buy surplus jazz sneakers at Leo's warehouse for $15. They work for everyday wear around the neighborhood.
O. Henry once wrote that you have to jump into another guy's shoes and walk around for a while to understand that guy (not a direct quote). If you have bucks, that's good, but please believe me that someday, as a professional dancer, you will expereince the joys of finding ballet slippers that fit and were a good buy.
