Aloha all,
Well let me just say first off that I don't wear tights, and you probably wouldn't consider me a "danseur." I don't like the outline of my ala alas showing (we call the package ala alas in Hawaii), so I just wear bball shorts. I am not doing grand jetes all day long so I don't think it matters that much. So, I am 22 and I decided to start taking ballet to improve my strength and flexibility. It has been a humbling experience. I am a professional hula dancer, and I thought I was in shape already, but ballet is taking it to another level. This is the thing. Are there any guys on this forum from Hawaii? I am the only guy in my class. There are other guys in my school, the Hawaii State Ballet, but they are younger than I am, pompous, arrogant and would like to keep an air of superiority about them. I am not into that. I am just looking for a 'hi' 'hello' from another kanak and a guy I can question when it comes to guy stuff. For example, when you do port au bras forward, what the hell are you supposed to do with the arm that drops? The women do different things. Oh, and when you are learning from a female should you emulate her presence, the spirit of her dance? Or should you try and make a more "masculine" looking? If you are, how then do you do that? Less flicking of the fingertips? More controlled movement? You can see I lots to think about.
Me ke aloha,
JT
