I wear a dance belt when riding horses, and I find it invaluable for protective purposes. As with dance, you want everything up and out of the way. The aesthetic advantages perhaps aren't so evident as with dance as there is less show-through with jodhpurs or breeches as with tights or a leotard (although there can be and it's good to know that won't happen in the middle of a lesson).
