Re: wearing tights to class

I am posted in London with my company and have been taking ballet classes for a couple of years here. The stigma of guys wearing tights is still very strong here. Even though I am an advanced ballet dancer, the other guys (and many girls) in my classes will just not wear a pair of tights! I find this ridiculous, especially when you think of the cold, damp English weather.

Additionally, I have to wear tights. Most people's skin color blends in with the color of the floor (e.g. tannish/white). I need the contrast of the black tights to make absolutely sure my kneecaps, for instance, are directly over my feet. Also, when there is a break in class, you cool off very quickly and you're glad you have a pair of tights on instead of just shorts. It really is no big deal to wear tights, guys.

  >>>>From the adult ballet classes I've been to, you can tell the women without perfect bodies are VERY body conscious when wearing exposing clothing.  Since almost everyone in class wears gym pants, etc., there is no "raising the bar" of standard acceptable dress in a ballet class.  I think you may be on to something when you say that a man with the chutzpah to wear tights or unitards in class might be inspiring enough for the women to follow suit.  >>>Jon, an excellent response.  I'me new to ballet as well and have just completed my second class.  I bit the bullet and invested in MStevens tights and Dance Belt  I had made up my mind, to start with, that "when in Rome, do as the Roman's do".  That has paid off.  I am 6' and 180 lbs and 59 yrs so if anyone should feel out of place, it's me.  The complements from those in my adult class have been very supportive.  Any concern that I had to start with is now passed by and I feel very comfortable and part of the class.  Any concerns you may have will wear off quickly.  GO FOR IT!>>OH, by the way.  There is another Dennis in this forum.  To differentiate, I'll hereby sign on as <<>>
