(a) Protection: There are many times when the legs have to be squeezed together, either for certain kinds of movement or just for a good, tight fifth position. At such times, you don't want anything down there that would be squeezed along with the legs. (b) Appearance: Ballet is an art that favors long lines, especially in the legs. This is why you point your feet whenever your legs are off the floor. But you also want the length of the leg to be enhanced at the hip, which means that one's gaze should be able to travel all the way up with no distracting lump at the top. By holding your genitals up and in front, the dance belt accomplishes both of these ends.As for what kind you prefer, that's such an individual choice that it's impossible to advise you. Fortunately, they aren't expensive, so it doesn't cost much to shop around. I happen to like the ones by G-Wiz:Dan Gardner G-Wiz Design 702-731-2093 gwizdesign@aol.com...but others like M. Stevens (lycra, very narrow thong), Capezio (several kinds, including one with a quilted front), Bal-Togs (they have a full-bottomed one, not recommended unless you absolutely can't stand thongs), & others.
