It doesn't matter if you think your body type is wrong. You're not interested in being a professional danseur! You want the experience!
As far as schools go, look around! I'd suggest looking for a school that has regular recitals or an associated (small or community) ballet company. Don't go to schools like Little Miss Suzzies School of Dance and Basket-weaving!
Don't worry about what others think, just do it! You have to live with yourself. There's no fun in sitting at home with a beer saying I bet I could have done that.
Another story....I would work-out at home in my ballet-togs, then, while cooling down, would walk my dog. There was this pro basketball player who lived down the hall, a big muscular guy. He would watch me and always remark about the shape I was in. I told him I took ballet. He didn't believe it! The next week I showed him my ballet slippers and he said I bought them just to fool him. I bought a shocking pink ballet bag and showed him all the ballet-stuff inside. He still insisted that nobody could be in such shape from ballet. He was traded to Los Angeles as "second-string" and I haven't heard of him since!
You never know what people will think. I happen to be gay and proud of it, but most of my business associates and many of the ladies I take ballet classes with don't believe it. Go figure!
You have to be true to yourself; otherwise you're living a lie!
Go for it!
