I know it takes nerve to do that,but it is really a pity you did not tell him how you feel and that he attracted you to this art.
I am certain he would be glad you that recognized him and for the positive influence he had.
Everybody, even the biggest masters, needs a feedback, oth positive and negative.And positive feedback makes a life much nicer and mobilizes all energy one has.
Never hesitate to tell people nice things.
