The reason that many athletes take ballet, and why many men should, is for something called the "center."
Ballet teaches the centering of the body, the proper alignment of the body weight and bones. In ballet you'll learn this technique which you really can't find anyplace else.
I don't know many gymnastic terms, but is the ending of the execises called the "dismount?" Ballet will train you to understand your body placement and understand where every bone and muscle is placed to maintain balance. Once you get to the ceter/floor exercises it will help you control your momentum. You'll also enhance your proprioception, knowing where your body parts are without looking, and ultimately where your bones and muscles are in space.
I do know that when I watch gymnastics on TV, whether it's the guys or the gals, I often see gymnasts land with little stumbles. When I watch ballet, I rarely see that. But I notice that gymnasts land with the body either forward or backwards from the body center. But if a ballet dancer did that, he or she would flat on their face/butt, and probably out of the company.
So consider your center, and the ability that ballet may bring.
