I'm 19 and took up ballet a year ago. I took it up after going to see the Dutch National Ballet in the Edinburgh festival and one of the reasons it inspired me was that the men were very 'masculine' and the strength required for some of the lifts must have been immense. My dad also thought it was a bit strange but i love doing it and in my opinion ballet can be one of the most masculine looking things you can do. I also think the father son relationships in our society are extremely repressed as society is changing so much. You have to remember that one of the main things of ballet is that it aims to make things that are incredibly mentally and physically demanding look very natural and easy. So it always "looks" like it may not be that hard but actually it is. It is just stereotypes that people have in their heads, thats what the problem is, whats wrong with looking slightly 'feminine' anyway if its for being graceful?
