I think ballet is a great subsitute for conventional workouts because(i) it's fun, so it doesn't seem like half as much effort as an hour down at the gym(ii) you learn coordination as well getting fit, which I think is a very important part of exercise (often overlooked; how much coordination do you learn in the gym?) (iii) the effects of the training last outside of class - you hold your poise & move better, so you carry on using the muscles you've been developing in class.
I've been going for only four months, but I'm already feeling _much_ fitter & a lot more flexible. Go for it!
