[i]>>"weggie effect" - the thong rides up in back.
>That's what I really hate - I guess the idea is that it lets you wear tights that show off every contour of your behind, as well as leaving nothing to the imagination in front. But I'm not in class to show off my backside.

I'm going to agree with these other guys; Capezio is much more comfortable. My first dance belt was given to me by the costumer in college (we were doing Shakespeare, and they were purchased for all of the guys). It was the most painful memory of the show, and for a few dance classes after that. After I bought the Capezio, I knew there was hope.
As for the concern in the initial question, hopefully you're not wearing your dancebelt like underwear, 18 hours a day. A few hours at a time, while working out, won't do any harm. If you're truly concerned about the health aspects, make sure to wear cotton boxers (not boxer briefs)when not in class. I've got seven kids, so there's obviously been no damage done. (Yeah, I really do!)
