the male dancer
written by on 27.05. at 02:54:18 - as answer to: You are all SISSIES!!! by Joan at > To be honest, males in tights are girly, or gay. Many dance sweetly, but ballet is for women and girls. Males(?) prancing around thinking women look as you as masculine is a joke! Oh, well...I thought something like that, too, when I was 18. Igrew out of it, however.... A little historical perspective helps.Once you've learned about some of the great 18th-century dynastiesof male dancers--the Vestris family, the Viganos--you begin to seethings in a different light. Then there are those 20th-century "sissies," like George Balanchine& his string of wives, or Baryshnikov & his girl friends, or EddieVillella & his two wives, or Kent Stowell who runs the PacificNorthwest Ballet with his wife Francia Russell, or Paul Mejia, whomarried Suzanne Farrell out from under Balanchine's nose...the listgoes on & on... But you know, I don't care. If I want to do a thing, I'll do it.If it were possible to prove that I was the only non-gay maleballet dancer in the entire history of the art, from the time ofCatherine di Medici clear down to the present day, I'd still takeclasses. I like doing it, I like the way if feels moving thatway, & I'm not about to ask anyone's permission. Tom Parsons Answers to this message:
