I'd like to give you one piece of advice that doesn't seem to be in the beginning ballet books. Don't look down at your feet and the floor. Keep your head up, centered with your body. When the head looks down, it disturbs your body's center, and fouls up your balance. If you want to look at your feet, or if you want to follow others in the class, glance sideways into the mirror, but keep your head up and peek down. I see this problem with a lot of beginners. I have experience, but like to take adult classes at the beginner level, which are slower and let me focus on technique. There are some women who like to stand by me, but they keep looking down to see how my feet move. I tell them to peek in the mirror rather than looking down, and that seems to help.
