the male dancer

You should too. I quickly found it was reassuring, not awkward. Fastest way to put the nerves to rest and quit worrying. As it happens, a female there knew me from outside. OMG! Before I had time to worry about hating being seen by someone I knew, she came over, started conversation with positive things to say that I was there. Nervousness gone. So, go out today and buy your dancebelt and black tights. The store clerk will help, and the printed labels help with sizing. The sooner you get over the nervous part, the happier you will be. Decide to wear tights to the first class. It worked well for me. You get self-confidence, the instructor knows you are serious, the girls are happy to have males participating, and you'll set an example that will reassure any guys not in tights who are still nervous. It's win-win-win.Try on your new dancewear at home. Chances are, you'll surprise yourself when you look in the mirror. You feel like you are wearing clothes far more than tights may have seemed before you tried them out. This is a major help - wear them around home until you don't feel the novelty any more. Still not sure? If you have a friend you trust you have someone who can get you through any remaining awkward feelings about being seen. Even the simplest, vague "you look ok" coming from someone else makes a big difference!Well, I don't know if this helps you decide. If not, ask your instructor or a past student from the class about alternatives. Nobody except yourself really cares what you are wearing. (BTW you still need a dancebelt with jazz pants.)
