the male dancer

I initially had enrolled in a Ballet I class at a local community college and after finally contacting Mr. Stefan Wenta regarding his ballet school, I was to participate in his Basic Placement class.I arrived at the college class and there were eight or so students present of which three were guys. At this point I'll mention that a couple of the things that intrigue me about classical ballet are how formality and discipline are applied to an art form, moreso than in any other form of dance. Everyone there was wearing very loose clothing and other than myself there was only one girl who even had ballet shoes - everyone else was simply barefoot. The class was due to begin at half-past the hour and when the instructor hadn't arrived someone openly asked where she was. Another student mentioned that the instructor had said that she would be ten minutes late to allow students time to change. I always understood that students needed to arrive early so as to be prepared for classes which begin at the designated time. Ten minutes came and went and the student who had mentioned what the teacher said decided to look for her. He came back and informed the class that she was sitting in her office and that she was giving an additional fifteen minutes for students to change. That's now twenty-five minutes into the designated start time of the class! This of course caused some discourse amongst the students present and I decided that if the instructor isn't that interested in the class well neither am I. Therefore, I gathered my things, walked to the admissions office and dropped the class; needless to say I was deeply disappointed. Later in the day I arrived at Mr. Wenta's studio. He turned out to be everything that I've been searching for in a ballet instructor! Although he's patient with students, he pays great attention to detail and he's quite the task master. I must say that in my first class with him, I learned more than I've ever learned in a single class during my limited ballet experience. The class is far from easy, though I enjoyed every painful drop of sweat. He informed me after class that it's offered twice a week and suggested that I come to both so as to better advance - I would've been there even without the suggestion. And so I've found my place for now in this small corner of the ballet world. I'm extremely pleased and I look forward to the learning experience. I thank you very much for your help and support and I hope that we may continue corresponding! >http://www.functionalart.com/wentaballet/ Answers to this message: |
