I have seen guys your age start ballet classes for the first time and really come along well.  If you're athletic and have good flexibility and coordination, that is a huge plus.  However, I know  one male student who started in his late teens and who had never done athletics of any kind.  But he had a great feeling for music and total determination.  He now does solo roles with a good local ballet company, and he looks great up there.

You have to find an adult beginner class in a good studio.  Lots of pro companies offer adult beginner.  If you go to one of those you'll be taught by a professional dancer/teacher.  Don't get freaked out by your first classes.  Your body is learning a new language and it takes a few months before the combinations become ingrained in you.  If you want to dance, you should take class three times a week.

Get black Capezio Footed Tights for Men.  They retail for $21.50, but you can get them for about 1/3 off if you shop around.  Get a Capezio Mens Dance Belt with Quilted Cotton Panel.  The retail is $24.00, but again shop around.  For shoes, get Capezio Canvas Romeo for Men.  They retail for $19.50, but you can them cheaper.  You can't go wrong if you get white ballet slippers and wear them with white socks over your tights.  Your teacher can see the line of your foot and ankle easily that way.  It is a good idea to fit your shoes wearing your tights and socks.  You'll get two pieces of elastic with your ballet slippers.  The sales person or your dance teacher will show you how to sew the elastic onto your shoes.  Also, it is good to get a piece of 1/2" elastic and make a belt out of it to roll in the waist band of your tights to keep them nice and snug.  You can wear your own cotton t-shirt with your dance clothes.

Everyone has their favorite brand names and styles of dance wear.  You'll probably get other suggestions from this forum.  But I recommend Capezio for a beginner because their clothes are inexpensive and really wear well.

I think it is great that you're going to do this.
