Twenty years ago that might have been true, because most dancebelts of that vintage had a flat panel that was slightly wider in front than in back.  To someone first trying to figure out what to do with it, it might have looked like the wide side was designed to partially cover your butt.

Those medieval torture devices (which were commonly and accurately known as "nutcrackers") have been replaced with the modern "thong style jock" you talk about.  You'd have to be incredibly dense to think the butt floss goes in front!

Dancebelts are pretty strange feeling at first, but eventually you will get used to wearing it.  Just remember the correct way to wear one, with your male goodies pointed up towards your belly button.  Your dancebelt is necessary because:-it keeps your parts out of the danger zone between your legs.  Otherwise things could get trapped when you lock your thighs together in 5th position.-you avoid that "clanging" sound and feel (ouch) when you land after a jump.-it keeps everything organized into a round mound under your tights so everyone watching you doesn't get a male anatomy lesson.  They are even effective at minimizing the visible effect of an random erection!

Don't be put off by dance clothing.  The tights are necessary to let your teacher see (and correct) what you are doing with your body.  Ballet is one of the best things you can get involved in.  Don't get discouraged if your progress comes slowly - it's worth it!
