As for the grand battement - that too is a combination of stretch and strength - you need both.  So you need a program of stretches - which you do religiously - every day but only after you are warmed up.  As for your arches - I don't recommend therabands. They need to be used carefully under the supervision of a responsible teacher or physical therapist.  You can work on your arches by carefully articulating your foot everytime you do a tendu  at the barre.  You can also pleat up a towel with your bare toes.  Or pick up objects  with your toes.  That too takes time - a lot of time.  Nothing happens quickly.  If you would like articles on stretch and strength - you can e-mail me for it at ORZAK@aol.com   Basheva

>I'm a 14 year old dancer who has just recently started dance.I've been taking ballet for about 5 weeks now and I'm not showing any improvement when I take my foot and leg up in grand batma I'm very inflexible in my adducters which I think is the problem not the hamstring. What can I do to bemore flexible and attain a higher alttitude in grand batma and other realted postions.Thats problem one problem two is my arches are pitifull even for a Guy. How can I get better arches, I've heard of something called a theraband or something like that but I've never seen one or learned how to use one. P.S I lift weights and sometimes bech press as much as 155 pounds and leg press as much a 245 pounds does that affect my ballt techniqe and possible stunt my growth? thanks I'll be looking foward to your answers on how to fix my problems.
