Don't let anyone dissuade you from that. And yes, as you've discovered, tights and leotards are just pieces of clothing, meant for men and women alike. If you want to try a leotard (it allows you to see your body better), wear it under the tights as is traditional for men. No one will laugh at you for that, they'll just respect you more.
