As a grown-up man, to attend ballet classes allows me to live out what I too call the feminine side of my personality. The music, the movements, to express your feelings in dance, it all gives me the opportunity to express what I love so much, but is so distant for me in my daily work as a banking lawyer. And there's a mix of other reasons too: fetishism - I love to dress in my blue leotard, grey ballet tights, white socks and black ballet slippers, narcicism - I love to look at myself in the mirrors, exhibitionism - I love to appear for the other students in my ballet outfit, etc. But all the way, I feel like a man, I love to do the pas-des-deux (however simple and basic) with the lady students, I like to now and then be given special attention in training male ballet steps, the everlasting attraction and confrontation between man and woman becomes very clear to me when dancing, that is: I feel like a man, not a ballerina with a dick. And: The absolute majority of the lady students are very supportive to have a man in class. No bad comments on my ballet outfit, and they chat with me as with the other students before and after class.Paal >Yea Michael, that's right. We think it's our "feminie side" because our culture has defined a hyper-masculinity that is difficult and unhealthy to live up to. But it's not --- and the further you go in ballet, the more you'll realize that the men and women still act like men and women in class and on stage.>I tend to think of it as connecting to the beautiful, sensual side of masculinity. It is truly masculine; we just don't think of it as masculine because we've forgotten that men can be beatuiful. Grasping for words, we call it our "feminie" side.>I understand how easy it is to identify with the ladies. All the things they do seem so natural for me to do too --- even if I don't do them much myself. I remember one of the other dancers was talking about how when she paints her toenails, it brightens her day. I've tried it too, it really works. Every time you look down at your toes, you see them looking back at you --- and that can help me feel better on a down day. Answers to this message: |
