Maybe it helps to understand how to straighten limbs. The idea is to make them as long as possible. So you pull them out from the hand/foot in a direction away from your body. The goal isn't to move your knee/elbow back, which would result in locked limbs --- it is to move the hand/foot as far away from the body as possible, which results in lengthened limbs.
