When you're studying ballet in the studio, the physical challenge to perfect the movement takes over and holds one's interest.  But when you're watching ballet, it has to in some way be good theater.  Whether or not there's an explicit story, there needs to be SOME kind of drama.  More likely than not, the recitals you're watching involve a lot of mediocre dancemaking.
