I used to hand-wash my white shoes, but these were leather, notcanvas (at least, leather on the outside). Someone on the balletnewsgroup recommended a machinists' soap called Go-Jo. I found itat a local auto parts store. (Unfortunately, they didn't ask mewhat I wanted it for. They must have assumed I wanted it for greasyhands. It would have been fun to tell them I needed it to wash myballet shoes.) It did the job, but then I started taking class in astudio where, for some reason, the shoes didn't get as dirty.
