Tom, I took the bull by the horns and picked up two boxes of Rit.  One was navy and the other was black.  I used the navy dye on the gray/slate tights I had written about.  The process was simple, though a bit time-consuming.  I got perfect results.  Today I repeated the process, using the black dye on two white tights.  One came out black, the other charcoal gray.  Now I have three tights that I can put into rotation for class.

If you want a solid color, this is easy.  Tie-dying, well, it was popular back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, but if you want to single-handedly revive the fashion, there must be old paperbacks or papyrus scrolls or stone tablets that have the instructions.  Peace, man!
