both to protect them & for appearance.  (a) Protection: Thereare many times when the legs have to be squeezed together, eitherfor certain kinds of movement or just for a good, tight fifthposition.  At such times, you don't want anything down there thatwould be squeezed along with the legs.  (b) Appearance: Balletis an art that favors long lines, especially in the legs.  Thisis why you point your feet whenever your legs are off the floor. But you also want the length of the leg to be enhanced at thehip, which means that one's gaze should be able to travel allthe way up with no distracting lump at the top.  By holding yourgenitals up and in front, the dance belt accomplishes both ofthese ends.

As for what kind you prefer, that's such an individual choicethat it's impossible to advise you.  Fortunately, they aren'texpensive, so it doesn't cost much to shop around.  I happen tolike the ones by G-Wiz:

...but others like M. Stevens (lycra, very narrow thong), Capezio(several kinds, including one with a quilted front), Bal-Togs(they have a full-bottomed one, not recommended unless youabsolutely can't stand thongs), & others.  People here willprobably recommend others, too.  I'm afraid you're pretty much onyour own here.

P.S.  Started at age 31; started again at age 62; now 70 & stillat it.  You're never too old as long as your body doesn't give out.
