I would have to say (since I haven't seen your work) that you should work your way up.  If you have just started, I do not suggest going for lead dancer, nor maybe the most presigous company.  Though I do not know the situation well.  I also would refrain from the attitude towards your teacher, obviously he does know *something* about dance since he is a teacher, if he doesn't, then you are wasting your time in his classes.
